Does UV radiation really penetrate car windows?
Yes. Car windows block a large part of UVB, but UVA largely penetrates glass. As a result, hands can be exposed to UVA for extended periods while driving, even when no direct heat or burning sensation is felt.
Why are the hands particularly vulnerable?
While driving, the backs of the hands are often exposed to incident light for extended periods. Because hands are almost always uncovered and less frequently protected with SPF than the face, they receive a lot of cumulative UV exposure.
